Teleca paves the way for CDMA handset vendors to get into Android

Teleca is one of the largest integrated solutions houses for developing phones based on Android. We have undertaken a project to extend the Android platform to support CDMA radio technology. This enables handset manufacturers to build CDMA handsets based on Android, and gives CDMA carriers the chance to enjoy the differentiation and benefits that Android handsets bring.
As a member of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) we are globally well-positioned to help handset manufacturers bring Android Open Source phones to market quickly and cost-effectively. Until now Android has only supported GSM and WCDMA mobile radio technologies.

Our project enables manufacturers to develop CDMA-only and world mode phones (GSM/WCDMA/CDMA) based on Android. This allows handset manufacturers and mobile network operators in North America and Asia to enhance their product portfolio with Android based devices supporting CDMA radio technology.

Solutions cover the entire value chain

Our Android solutions portfolio covers the entire value chain for Android phone creation and variation including base porting, modem integration, performance optimization, middleware extension, application development, user interface customization and system testing. We work as the link between operators and handset manufacturers to ensure all CDMA operator specific requirements are complied with at launch.

In order to support existing Android applications the application interface is backward compatible, but extended to include CDMA specific methods, parameters or notifications to make the new features accessible by all new applications. This brings out the strength of Android, opening the phones for applications developed by third parties.

We have been working with a major CDMA chipset provider to integrate and test the CDMA enabled Android on a reference phone. The project will be rolled into a future Android release and will be available shortly.
